What is the Fleet of Flowers?

Founded in 1937, Tradewinds Charters is an ocean charter company operating out of Depoe Bay, Oregon. In addition to facilitating top deck sportfishing, whale watching, and ecology excursions, Tradewinds Charters also draws on its resources to host the annual Fleet of Flowers memorial event.

Since 1945, the Fleet of Flowers has provided an opportunity for families to honor the memories of their loved ones. Each Memorial Day, Depoe Bay community members and visitors come together along the scenic Oregon coast to honor the individuals who lost their lives at sea during the prior year, as well as fishermen, firefighters, and military service members who sacrificed their lives while helping others.

The memorial event begins with a ceremony on the shores of Depoe Bay Harbor. Afterwards, a procession of boats forms a parade of vibrant wreaths and flowers that passes under the Highway 101 bridge. Once the boats reach open water, they form a circle and place their wreaths in the water to form a touching visual memorial.

The Fleet of Flowers began as a memorial for Roy Bower and Jack Chambers, two fisherman who lost their lives while attempting to save a fellow fishing vessel. For over 70 years, the event has honored their memory with a celebration of community heroes.
